A GOODBYE TO HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER

how-i-met-your-mother-musical

By the time you read this you would have probably seen the last episode of How I Met Your Mother. If you haven’t I suggest that you stop right now as I wouldn’t want to spoil anything. If you’re done then you already know that one of the longest love stories ever told that lasted for almost a decade has officially come to a close.

Here at Flipgeeks we’re big fans of How I Met Your Mother. Today we like to share our insights about the series, its finale and say our goodbyes to one of television’s most love show today.

how-i-met-your-mother-season-8-lilyIf I remember it right I only started watching the show probably on the 3rd season already and just borrowed copies of the previous. I was immediately got hooked with the gang of Lily, Marshall, Robin, Barney and Ted.  HIMYM (How I Met Your Mother) was a TV show that you can just jump on any season and still understand and enjoy show. There are seldom recurring stories/characters other than the main group of characters so it’s rarely that you’d feel left out on something. It’s a 30 minute show about a group of friends hanging out and living out their lives. HIMYM was a tv series that most people could relate to, the characters they live average lives, go to work, hang-out have fun, things that people do every day (well, of course Barney is an exception). We all got happy and rooted for Ted whenever he has a new love interest, hoping that it’ll finally be the mother and got devastated too during his losses.

Marshall-Barney-how-i-met-your-motherPersonally, I could relate a lot to Ted and what happened to him during the course of the show. I even tell my friends how I am like Ted Mosby in real life because the most of the stuff that happened to him did happen to me too (minus the exaggerated ones) and having watched the finale like all of the HIMYM fans, I was at a loss too. Fans are debating whether or not the finale was the ending that HIMYM deserves. My stand on this, I agree with the ending. I understand all the arguments that the show was how Ted met the mother of his kids and not how he ended up with his long-time love, Robin. Yes it is a valid point however the finale did just that, it showed how Ted met Tracy, how after all those years of finally meeting each other along with the history of the yellow umbrella they finally met.  I bet fans would have wished that Craig Thomas and Carter Bays‘ would have ended it there. The last few episodes leading to the finale had hints about how Tracy’s like would end and I believe that the creators didn’t want to have Ted a miserable ending; Ted deserves a happy ending of course! And that would be the other reason why I agree to the finale’s ending that Ted would finally be with Robin.

Barney-StinsonThe ending even if most fans would disagree was an ending that was well planned. It’s not something that the creators forced or a scene that was just added all of a sudden. Over the course of the show we’ve seen the relationship develop between Ted and Robin through the years. They were together, got separated, got into other relationships with other people but throughout the years they’ve always remained friends and Ted never lost his love for Robin. Robin even said in an episode that Ted was always the person who always came through for her and the one who’s always there for her.  Ted always had deep admirations and respect for his friends and of course, Robin and even at the expense of his own happiness (something that he did for all of his friends) he would prefer them to be happy. Since Ted just lost his wife who he had waited for the longest time, its only proper that the creators made him end up with his first love, Robin. The course of our lives is something that’s not planned and along with it are unexpected turns, new beginnings and endings that we wouldn’t have wanted. Let’s all just be happy and thankful about how beautiful the show was, how it would always be Legen – wait for it – Dary! How it brightened our days, touched our hearts and made us believe in love. How I Met Your Mother had ended and as cliché as it may sound, it’s definitely a show that’s going to be forever etched in the heart of its fans.

how-i-met-your-mother-tedHere are a few words from my fellow Flipgeeks, Yuri about his thoughts on the finale:

“In a way, I can say that the finale’s quite surprising. It’s not the conclusion I really expected. I did not see that coming. For a while, there was the buildup between The Mother and Ted. Slowly, we began rooting for them, to see more of them. In contrast, there was Robin. For 9 seasons, we were led to believe that they are not meant to be together despite the subtle hints and implications. Guess all those hints finally fell into one place. We may feel cheated, but the ending isn’t really that bad. That’s how reality works; It’s not often flowers and sunshine. It takes unexpected turns, some which we might hate or love.”

It has been confirmed that an alternate ending would be released along with the DVD How I Met Your Mother: The Complete Series. Creator Carter Bays tweeted“If you didn’t like the finale, I guess that happens. We tried something and it didn’t connect with you. I hope we’re still friends” and another tweet that confirms the alternate ending:   “We’re going to include that version on the Complete Series DVD as an alternate finale to How I Met Your Mother.”  I guess in the end, all the fans would still be happy. Also fans need not be sad, if you felt that we didn’t have enough screen time for Tracy, the mother, we know more about her the upcoming show, How I Met Your Dad.
