COMIC BOOK REVIEW: Wonder Woman # 1

Earl’s Take:

The way I saw “Wonder Woman” by the creative team of Brian Azzarello and Cliff Chiang, it was a different and radical take on Greek Mythology.

And I was proven right with the release of the first issue of Wonder Woman. It’s a great book with a very interesting story. While not trying to be an origin story for Diana the book reels in the readers with a tale of mystery with a bit of horror and gore on the side. The past volumes of Wonder Woman spoke more about the heroine, the new volume’s first story arc downplays the goddess and peacekeeper role and puts Diana’s role of being a warrior front and center.

Cliff Chiang‘s art is really new to me but I can say that the artwork together with Azzarello’s writing style does good music together.

Being a bit of gamer, the whole approach to this new book had a little tinge of “God of War” in the book in it which would play a big part in raking in new readers. In all fairness to the book and the creative team, Wonder Woman # 1 was really one of the books that people would eventually pick up once the story quickens the pace and we get to see more of the plans and schemes of the gods including Zeus.

In a past interview, writer Brian Azzarello has stated that his take on Wonder Woman would be different from the other superhero books that comes out under DC Comics’ New 52 banner as it sheds the superheroics and focuses on a more grounded storyline with touches of horror here and there.

Wonder Woman # 1 has my vote of confidence and this will definitely be one of the book that I plan to get on a monthly basis.

VERDICT: EXCELLENT

Norby’s take:

I first identified Wonder Woman by watching old reruns of Hanna-Barbera’s Super Friends when I was a little tyke. She was this awesome Amazon woman with sexy suit and an invisible jet. Who wouldn’t want a girlfirend like while she can kick your bullies for you while you’re just sitting back with a pitcher of Kool-Aid. Thus as time passed by, I grew up. I haven’t read any Wonder Woman comics or any news of fame from her solo title except from articles and recommendations of the run by George Perez.

With DC Comics’ The New 52 campaign, a newly creative is assigned: Brian Azzarello and Cliff Chiang. After reading WONDER WOMAN #1, I had a good time reading it. It was engaging and awesome.

Brian Azzarello gave us a story with beheaded horses-Women in skimpy dresses, panties and spandex-Greek mythology-mystery. Azzarello executed the characters and made me care enough well. As well as the plot.

I haven’t seen any Cliff Chiang art before, but I staring to like his work with this issue. Not too realistic or cartoonish. It reminded me styles of Karl Moline and Riccardo Burchielli. His panels are good enough for my taste.

Other than Batman #1, Wonder Woman #1 is one of the best books of the third week of DC Comics’ September – The New 52 Of The Week. Is it worth the money? Yes. Is it a good start for new readers? Yes. Wonder Woman is my dream girl again.
