Or are you that chick hanging out and going lovey-dovey with a guy who is into comics and you can’t get into his world because you are clueless about it? (You are trying your best right? Cool.) Or, in a typical scenario, you are a good friend with this nice boy-next-door and then, you just discovered that he is into comics and you are curious what’s about that world? Or, you just a femme fatale that who is curious to know what comics is all about and why many people are into it. Well, this little article can help you out.

Comics are not only just for geeks. They’re actually for everyone, either you are in the fashion world or you are into some kind of scientific profession. Being a lady is not a hindrance. So, in this week’s Girly Comic Guide, we collected some pieces of comics that doesn’t only shout heroes, crimes and justices, but also mirror social issues and probably, your everyday life. These featured comic books all have female lead characters that you can relate and probably, see yourself to them too.

Ms. Marvel1. Ms. Marvel

  • Publisher: Marvel Comics
  • Written By: G. Willow Wilson
  • Issues: 9 Issues as of October 15, 2014. 10th Issue will be available on November 19, 2014.

This version of Ms. Marvel is a little different with Carol Danvers and Mar-vell. Yes, she got the Inhuman genes, but she is not different from someone like you and me. Created by Sana Amanat and G. Willow Wilson, this is the story of Kamala Khan, a Muslim-American teenage girl who balances her life as Ms. Marvel and as a teenage student. But, there’s more in becoming Ms. Marvel for this Pakistani young lady. As a girl living in this liberated society, Kamala is also struggling in the world where there are labels imposed to you. This comic book can show to any female reader, geek or non-geek, that you can do whatever you want to do without stepping somebody’s life. Kamala’s character shows what a teenager experiences everyday — the struggle on finding his sense of self, self-worth and most of all, the purpose in life.

2. Rat Queens

If you, dear lady reader, loves fantasy and is into Medieval setting, this comic book is definitely for you. Rat Queens is a book inspired from Dungeons and Dragons (in sense of the setting) and with the concept of Lord of The Rings meets Bridesmaid. Created by Kurtis J. Wiebe, this book features the adventure of five female elves against their adversaries. Just imagine that Aragorn’s team fighting their lives (minus Sauron and Frodo), in female fashion and attitude. It’s about being sassy with sorcery, lore and candies!

Fatale3. Fatale

Fatale is not your typical comic book that has supernatural involvement. (Don’t worry, it doesn’t involve vampires.) If you are a female reader who is looking for bad-ass female lead character and who is also into noir, then you definitely hit the jackpot. Written by well-renowned comic book writer, Ed Brubaker, this book tells you the story of Josephine or “Jo” — a beautiful archetypal dangerous woman who has a supernatural skill to hypnotize men whether she likes it or not. But, another creepy thing is that, Jo is seemingly immortal. With this, she struggles on how she controls and understand this ability and at the same time, trying to survive her everyday life escaping from a violent cult that is pursuing her. Just imagine, Nikita meets Alias then meets Buffy The Vampire Slayer in 24 issues.

Saga4. Saga

  • Publisher: Image Comics
  • Written By: Brian K. Vaughan
  • Art By: Fiona Staples
  • Issues: 24

Okay. This next comic book, I know most of you, ladies will surely love. Family, love and adventure — this is what Saga is all about. Written by Brian K. Vaughan and with the art of Fiona Staples, this book chronicles the space adventures and personal struggles of Alana and Marko, as a growing family, as they flee from the authorities with their newborn child, Hazel. I have to tell you, that Alana and Marko are from long-warring extraterrestrial races — and, no, this is not your typical Romeo and Juliet story. As stated by Vaughan, he wanted to write a story that depicts about family and parenthood which inspired him to write Saga. In this comic book, just imagine the TV series “7th Heaven” (plus some bit and pieces of cursing) meets “Romeo and Juliet” with a mix of “Star Wars“. It is a love story made in space and babies.
