Marvel has officially announced a new miniseries for its line of Star Wars comics starring the fan-favorite Sith Lord Darth Maul. Revealed on USA Today, Star Wars: Darth Maul will be a five-issue miniseries written by Cullen Bunn with art by Luke Ross. The series is set to debut in February 2017.

Star Wars: Darth Maul is set to take place before Darth Maul’s debut in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, where his short-lived appearance cemented him among the favorites.

The comics follows Maul as a young apprentice filled with rage still in his training under Darth Sidious, who would later become the Galactic Emperor Palpatine. Still forbidden to engage the Jedi, Maul vents his frustrations through hunting down the inhabitants of the cosmic underworld.

After running accross a young padawan named Eldra Kaitis, Maul takes this opportunity to test his own skills and potentially turn someone to the dark side.

Bunn told USA Today that he took a lot of inspiration from Ray Park’s performance in The Phantom Menace as well as the fully accomplished Sith Lord seen in The Clone Wars and Rebels animated series.

Bunn also admitted being interested in the fine line where the dark side meets the light, saying “a big part of the story is Darth Maul’s descent to the dark side and almost being tempted away from it.”

Star Wars: Darth Maul will debut February 2017.
