ONE-FOURTH INDIE REPORT: JP Palabon Showing his Golden Balls this Summer 2014

FLIPGEEKS: Kamusta ang 2014 sayo so far?
JP PALABON: Masaya naman. Maaga pa pero marami nang naganap na masasayang comics events, at marami din akong nababalitaang magagandang titles na lalabas this year kaya excited talaga ako. Of course kasama na yung title ko sa magagandang titles na yon. [Laughs]

FG: How was Baguiocon (Baguio Komikon), since you were one of the main guests dun?
JPP: The event itself was great! Maganda yung venue din at mababit naman ang organizers; inofferan pa kami ng free lodging. Horror murder house nga lang yung nakuha naming cottage sa Teacher’s Camp pero masaya din. The best part was hanging out and talking with other guests.
FG: Teacher’s Camp ba?
JPP: Oo, yung cottage namin ang nagiisang cottage dun na may crucifix sa pintuan! So, dapat di na ako nagulat nung pagpasok namin [laughs]!
FG: [Laughs] We attended last year. Dun din kami nagstay.
JPP: Kung makukuha ninyo yung cottage na yun, I advise that you do. You could smell literally smell the ghosts in there. Fun con!

Nung gabi dikit-dikit kami ng ibang guests tapos nagchachant na ako ng “I only believe in science,” ng paulit-ulit [laughs]

FG: [Laughs] anyway, may ginagawa ka bang new komiks this year?
JPP: Yes, for this summer, ilalabas ko na yung pangatlong issue ng Puso Negro. May plan din ako maglabas ng bagong title sa November sa Komikon, collaboration namin ng friend ko, unless di na kami friends then collaboration na namin ng enemy ko.
FG: Do I know your friend ba? An entity sa komiks community or just a new guy?
JPP: Ah, si Jonas Lechuga, creator ng Big Battle Hero: Bulas. Featured siya sa Sulyap 2 this year so check him out. Magaling yun. [Laughs]
FG: Will do.

FG: Tell me about (Puso Negro) issue 3
JPP: Issue 3 is kind of special kasi may co-writer ako for one chapter. Si Paolo Herras of Noodle Boy. Also we’ll get to see more about Puso and his relationship with his mother, and his bestfriend Donats. I think masmahaba din ng onti tong issue na to kesa sa naunang dalawa. I think maganda ang kalalabasan ng issue 3!

FG: [Laughs] well, may time ka pa para baguhin ang details if ever, right?
JPP: Ok na yan. I learned to live with my mistakes na [laughs].

Coz I make them frequently.

FG: Kamusta ang feedback ng mga peers and readers ng komiks mo?
JPP: Maganda naman ang feedback. Pero siyempre may mga ‘di naman negative, para sa akin, nakakatawang reactions. Like may friend ako na ayaw daw basahin yung comics ko ng officemate niya kasi baka “kabaklaan” daw ang laman dahil sa cover [laughs]! Pero yun ang gusto kong makuhang reaction sa covers ko, gusto kong makakuha ng strong emotions mula sa nakakakita. Also, hindi porke maraming flowers eh kabaklaan na. Bakit yung nakaburol, maraming flowers?

FG: How about the number of pages for this issue, same as issue 2, more pages or less pages?
JPP: Tancha ko more ngayon.
FG: Will it have same price ?
JPP: Hmmm. Oo, siguro. Yup, tingin ko same price pa rin.

FG: Do you plan to have your own booth this year?
JPP: Yup. Kumuha na ako ng booths sa Komikon Summer 2014 at Komikon 2014

FG: Nice! May technique ka ba to attract people to go to your booth?
JPP: Yup. Last year may displays ako sa table namin. Looking at the pictures, naisip ko na kulang pa. So this year, I’m planning something special sa booth namin, pero surprise yon [laughs]! Abangan nyo nalang dahil the best prize is a surprise!
FG: [Laughs] like an ala-Wheel of Fortune wheel ba? A cosplayer tumatambay? Kissing booth?
JPP: Di naman ganon ka garbo [laughs]! Something that will go nicely with the launch of my issue 3 lang.

FG: What other stuff are you working on?
JPP: Other than my comics and work? Wala na [laughs]! Focus lang ako ngayon sa ilalabas kong books. I need to promote my books more kasi I wanna win some awards this year [laughs]!
