Earlier this month, we were invited to the Assassins Creed: Valhalla – Siege of Paris launch. We were able to learn first hand from Ubisoft what gamers could expect in the expansion. It was also a proud moment to learn that Ubisoft Singapore and the Philippines contributed to the development of the game.

STORY

Siege of Paris is the latest expansion after The Legend of Beowolf and Wrath of Druids. In Siege of Paris, Eivor takes his axe to the roads of Francia in one of the most infamous battles in the history of the land. Siege of Paris starts with a visit from Toka in Ravensthorpe, aide to Sigfred, chieftain of the Elgring Clan.

You can track the quest after completing the game’s first story arcs – Grantebridgescireor or Ledecestrescire. The task seems pretty straightforward ala-Lord of The Rings with Eivor saying “and you’ll have axe.” Only to find out how convoluted Francia is. You’ll meet characters at play in the war for power over the land.

Your decision on who to trust and support may turn the tides of war in their favor. Whether it’s your fellow viking Sigfred, Richardis - the empress of Kingdom of Francia,  Count Odo – the protector of Paris, or the mad king – Charles the Fat.

GAMEPLAY

The recommended power level for Siege of Paris is 200. Players who just started their viking adventure may need to take their time in gaining and absorb everything in Valhalla before venturing to Francia. The game can be overwhelming at times so take your time and enjoy rather than rushing and rage quitting because of the difficulty.

However, the power level is recommended but not required. You can even  switch the difficulty at any time if your only after the story. If your power level’s over 200, the game automatically adjusts to your level and missions getting more difficult with your progress.

Siege of Paris offers a bit of throwback with “Infiltration Missions” , which is a reminiscent of the franchise’s black box missions.  There are a total of 5 infiltration missions that lets you explore the map and let you uncover different clues that would lead to your assassination target. We think that there is a missed opportunity for this feature. Though infiltration missions are not really 100% linear, you are only limited to a few options unlike other games that offer free roam on how to attack the missions. Also, blending in the crowd is almost not existent as it doesn’t have an impact to the gameplay.

You’ll also get reacquainted to the Valhalla’s favorite pests – rats. In Siege of Paris, you’ll have the face “Rat Swarms” , which would attack both you and the game’s NPCs. It’s fight or flight mode as these rats are unkillable and attacking them would only shoo them away. Though a new feature, this is more of a headache than a delight. When swarmed with rats, it hampers your movement that eventually leads to your death as these rats chews your health bar like cheese. Just like in real life – we’re not fans of rats.

With any expansion, we are introduced to a new slew of armor and weapons. In Siege of Paris, we met our new best friend – the Scythe. Its range and power is a delight to see especially when you execute your special move. Just look at how massive and intricate that blade is.

VISUALS AND PERFORMANCE

Assassin's Creed Valhalla_FlipGeeks_11

What’s really impressive about Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla as a whole is how beautiful it is and how well runs it even on the base PS4. We are in time where games are transitioning from the current gen to the next gen. I started playing the base game on my 10 year old LED monitor and eventually upgraded into a 4K HDR TV and I was blown away! Still playing on the same PS4 but the game already feels different. From the characters, the environment, and effects everything is beautiful in high definition!

I can only imagine how astounding the game is to play either on the PS5 or a high end gaming PC. These screenshots doesn’t do the game justice. You need to experience it yourself!

VERDICT

It had everything that we expected from the franchise and it is in the upper tier of open-world action-adventure RPG. Siege of Paris didn’t change our views on the game but it’s just that.

Don’t get us wrong, Siege of Paris is not a bad addition to Assassins Creed: Valhalla but neither did it improve the overall experience, it feels more of the same. If you’ve only started the game, you barely scratched the surface and the new content would offer a new experience in your progress.

However, this may not be the same for high level players and completionists. As is with other open-world games, at some point it would eventually be repetitive and having to repeat the same missions may seem more of a chore than joy.

If this would be the last DLC for Assassins Creed: Valhalla then it would not be a bad way to close this chapter in the Assassins Creed franchise. We can only imagine in what point of history our assassins would take us next.

Assassins Creed: Valhalla – Siege of Paris is now available on the PlayStation 4,  PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X and Series S, Microsoft Windows.
