The pilot picks right up where the previous season left off—Joel stuck in a mental health facility, Abby and Eric still in the kitchen trying to cook up a cure, and with Shiela still chained in the basement.
Shiela enters her “feral mode”, where she is more prone to violent outburts of uncontrollable rage, and the family struggles to adjust to it. True to the dark humor that made the first season charming to its fans, the season 2 pilot maintains the same formula of lovable characters stuck in hell together.
THE GOOD
There is no apparent decline in character development yet, and the main cast retains the same defining traits and chemistry. What I love most about the pilot is Eric being so damn relatable, and his witty quips will make you mutter “same”.
The pilot also did a great job of setting up the tone for the rest of the series: Season One’s main arc is finding a cure, and Season Two will be about dealing with Shiela’s “feral mode” and the other possible undead in Sta. Clarita.
It was a good way to keep the ball rolling, with an unexpected twist at the end that you won’t see coming.
THE BAD
In the words of Ron, “why do they tease us with such tiny amounts of juice?” The 30-minute pilot will leave you hungry for more! That’s what makes this series so good—it’s hard to put down once you get a taste of it.
