REVIEW: Imaginary Fiends #1 – A great start for horror
Imaginary Fiends, much like the critters in its pages, snuck up on me and left me with a feeling that something was deeply wrong
IMAGINARY FIENDS #1, much like the critters in its pages, snuck up on me and left me with a feeling that something was deeply wrong. And that made me love it. It’s a great start for a horror title, establishing flawed, difficult characters and a very interesting premise.
It’s hard to summarize the big concepts, but suffice to say that your imaginary friends are actually some kind of inter-dimensional beings, and while most remain harmless, a few become malevolent. We meet Melba Li, who under the sway of such a being, committed some terrible acts as a kid. In this first issue she is recruited by the FBI to hunt down other such beings. The catch is in order to hunt them, they need one, which in this case is Li’s monstrous fiend Polly Peachpit.
Imaginary Fiends #1 is a great set-up, and holds a lot of potential. There are some genuinely creepy moments, as well as some wonderfully weird images that grip the reader. The investigations make it seem like it’ll have materials issue to issue, and there’s also a larger plot in place. Imaginary Fiends is a title to start following for a regular horror fix.
