Two hundred issues ago, Silver Surfer flew his first issue in the 1970s. Two hundred issues later, the former herald of world eating entity Galactus celebrates with a BANG! Why so? Okay, Dan Slott, Mike Allred and Laura Allred craft a tale about closure (of sorts), superhero weirdness and wackiness, and the continuing struggle of the Surfer’s existentialist loneliness (despite he has someone to lean on).

Slott’s human way of connecting readers to the superheroes’ everyday struggles and the inclusion of Spider-Man in the mix make this 200th issue a memorable chapter of the Silver Surfer 50-year canon, although the quirkiness take on the silver herald is a refreshing way to new and even current followers because the Silver Surfer I know is very, very serious and highly philosophical, contemplative and reflective even in battles. No wonder why the current Silver Surfer series is one of the best reads (though underrated in commercial aspect, so sad).
The Allred couple’s trademark illustrations add gravitas to an already intriguing mix of Slott’s patented drama and the continuing dynamism of the unlikely racial couple (although Norrin had previous loved ones from Earth itself in some mini-series). Their character takes are fun to view, very optimistic even in the heat of the battle, and heartwarming to scrutinize especially the facial portrayals. Allred power tandem deserves the praises they receive right now, particularly the recent Eisner’s (Best Single Issue, Silver Surfer #11 of last year–FIND IT, READ IT. One of the best comic stories EVER!).
Silver Surfer #6 reads like a celebratory chapter due to the Eisner’s moment (some photos are included during the ceremonies), in addition of the presentation of all 200 Silver Surfer cover arts (but excluded are the mini-series but deemed non-canon or otherwise, so no Silver Surfer PARABLES by Stan Lee and Moebius, and even by Stephen Segovia, Carlo Pagulayan and Harvey Tolibao’s run). Unlike many mainstream superhero titles right now, the current creative team continues the core essence of Norrin with the fusion of their respective artistic touches that gives a sweet, wacky, and touching feel to the heroic but alienated, well, alien. Great Job!
