uy si crushHilarious, cute and totally relatable would be the words to describe Uy si Crush, Vol. 1 by Richard Mercado and Gaby Taylo from Blue Indie Komiks.

The story revolves around Isay, Juan, and Kasi. Isay and Juan have a crush on each other but both are quite oblivious about each other’s feelings. Juan, being a plain guy thought that Isay talks to him just to get close to his best friend Kasi, who is quite a handsome guy. Hilarity issues as both tries their best to interact with each other but eventually fails because of Juan’s low self-esteem. Though the story seems shallow and just written for fun, it eventually gets a bit deeper as the story progresses. With Kasi getting involved in the story more, we get to know a lot about him and his past which would eventually might affect Juan in the future. The growth of the story would make the reader relate and attach to these characters as they also include current jokes and social issues, incorporating them to the situations.

The art style is simple, but easy to love. Though the style changes from time to time, it becomes consistent when the story is told on each characters point of view, including Kasi. Juan is drawn as simple and as dull as it could be to show the difference between him and Kasi who is drawn to be very handsome, tall and muscular. The comic is mostly drawn with just the characters and rarely has a background unless it’s for dramatic purposes, which works really well as it makes the reader focus on the funny scenes instead.

It’s a good read, definitely a recommended one at that. Not to heavy but not to light either, just enough for even a casual reader to get into.

The comics are uploaded at Blue Indie Komiks’ facebook page regularly. Uy si Crush #13 will have its premiere release this April.
