“I’m Ronald King.
I always have a plan.”

I was actually very surprised at how the ending turned out. It was shocking but, in a way, inevitable. Despite the movie-like stunts throughout the series, it is still grounded in with a bit of reality. In the end, the story was not just about one King, but it was also about his son, Atticus. In a way, it was story of two Kings. It was about righting past wrongs and trying to make up for a life of regret.

From here on out, we will be discussing this review with spoilers, it is the last chapter after all and it would be amiss to not do a complete dissection of the series. You have been warned.

(SPOILER!) Ronald King set out on his mission, knowing it was going to be his last, he was going to take as much of these “monsters” with him, as he could. Even if it meant, ending up as a mutilated corpse on the cold floor. Whatever it takes.

As the finale issue, writer Mark Millar made the violence was gratuitous. Of course, there was sex, albeit being a flashback, since you know, Ronald’s sexual prowess wasn’t as it was back then. Hey! Artist Matteo Scalera was really going out with a bang-in a good way. One death had me do a visible wince. Then go back a couple of panels, to read it again, again.  Yup – its up there in the top King of Spies gruesome deaths list. You’ll know it when you see it.

I would have liked to have seen how Ronald was able to pull out his final plan. Also, I thought that Atticus might have changed what he thought of his father too quickly, maybe an indicated interval in time would have helped establish that it took Atticus time to have a change of heart.

I appreciated the small details that was scattered across the series, come together nicely in the end. Like the old woman in the boat, the other woman in the park. It all comes back to Ronald King wanting to correct the many different mistakes in his life.

Prequel? Sequel? How things wrapped up, there really is much freedom, whether to do a prequel or a sequel. A prequel can showcase a younger Ronald King and focus on any of his many adventures. While a sequel can of course, follow his son Atticus. Millar can go either way.
