The penultimate chapter to Mark Millar‘s King of Spies continues to deliver in all of the action sequences deserving of the big screen and then some. Note lots of violence in this chapter. One panel, in particular, made me wince away, and it’s not like you can feel sorry for the one on the receiving end since that’s how Ronald King operates. He is dangerous, because “he knows where the bodies are buried and who deserves to die.”
Millar goes all out and there are no stops to the ways and means that he takes out his targets. Bombs and detonation devices in body cavities – you wouldn’t want to know how King got them in there. The even scarier thing about this chapter? Much of what happens in it is an echo of what is happening in real life. Abuses in the church that were covered up, the influential Hollywood producer with all the rape allegations, lockdown riots in Paris. It all feels too real in a scary way.
Remember in King of Spies #2 when I talked about this pair of mutilated twins who have a personal vendetta against King? They finally make their appearance and their combined fighting style – which I was looking forward to seeing did not disappoint, although I would’ve loved to see more. Plus – bulletproof soles are actually a pretty good idea. I would pay to see a live-action adaptation of the twins fighting on screen.
And of course, we have Ronald King’s son Atticus, closing in on his old man. It would be interesting to see these two finally come face to face and hash out whatever baggage they have. The question is if they will let their guns or fists do the talking.
Despite King’s madness, he says he wants to be remembered that way. Trying to make things right and making a difference. I guess we will see if all that comes to fruition in the final chapter!
