LOKAL KOMIKEROS: From 2013, Now To 2014 Part 1

It’s 2014. people start the new year with their own resolutions. We here in Flipgeeks would like to start an annual feature that would feature our talents in our local comic book community where we ask their 2013 experience and their 2014 plans. In this post, you’ll hear from: Dark Chapel, Paolo Chikiamko and Budjette Tan.

What was your favorite comic of 2013?
Well, I can’t just give you one book. So instead here are a few of my indie komik recommendations.
1. Kubori Kikiam Omnibus by Michael David
2. Drop Dead Dangerous #3 by Happy Lockjaw
3. The Hotdog Prince #6 by Francis Martelino
4. Richard Keso: Kesong City by Julius Villanueva
5. And I have to be a total jerk and claim that COSMICS FRIENDS OSMOSI by QBCCC [The Quarterly Bathroom Companion Comics Compendium] is one of the best books to be released towards the end of 2013.

A DARK HORSE, yes but it is also very MARVELous. A brand new IMAGE so to speak. One that doesn’t cause DC-ing or VERTIGO.

What was the best achievement that you reached in 2013?
Cosmic Friends Osmosi of course! That and being able to do an art talk at our very own alma mater. Which others might feel like it’s not a big thing. But it is, for SSM! [Silent Sanctum Manga!] atleast. Komikon Baguio, Winter Komikon (medyo badboy), getting banned and being able to release 3 new books for 2013.

So yeah, We’re very successful at what we do. Life’s good and we’re the living proof of it.

What are your comic book-related projects that are coming out in 2014?

THAT however, is classified information. And quite frankly, I’m not too sure if I’m gonna be able to finish all of them in time. But we do have A LOT planned for 2014. And I really do mean A LOT!Collaborations, NEW books, NEW titles, NEW products, the works…  All from the same OLD brand you can trust & love, SSM!I, thank you!

What was your favorite comic of 2013?
Ugh, hard to pick just one, so here are a few favorites, in no particular order, and including stuff released before this year that I only read this year:

* Delilah Dirk and the Turkish Lieutenant (Delilah Dirk #1) by Tony Cliff
* The Example by Tom Taylor and Colin Wilson
* Malinki Robot by Sonny Liew
* Zsazsa Zaturnnah sa Kalakhang Maynila (Part 1) by Carlo Vergara
* Tabi Po by Mervin Malonzo — but that’s cheating a bit, since Mervin sends me stuff before it’s publicly released. Doesn’t change the fact that it’s awesome though, and everyone’s in for a treat when the book drops from Visprint this year.

What was the best achievement that you reached in 2013?
2013 was quite an eventful year. I published my longest work of fiction (Slammed!, an interactive wrestling novel/app from Choice of Games) , and spoke at my first international writers conferences. On the purely comics front, I’d say these three were tops: releasing the full first wave of Mythspace books (and getting them picked up for publication), judging the Graphic Literature category at the National Book Awards, and putting the groundwork together for… well, I’ll just answer that in the next question.

What are your comic book-related projects that are coming out in 2014?
The Mythspace compilation from Visprint will be out late this year, and that’s exciting as hell. But even more so is the fact that the Mythspace team and a few other very talented creators are coming together next year to form a comic creation studio, Studio Salimbal, that combines digital and print models. We’ll likely officially launch our website a few months before the Mythspace volume release, but we’re already working on comics for the site, and we’re very excited about the team we’ve put together.

We’ll have a more official announcement by late January or sometime February.
