It is the standard for Gundam Universe figures that are well-built, sturdy, highly detailed, articulated, and poseable.

The plastic feels rubberry.

Bottom Line

This review is the second figure that we are reviewing from Bandai’s Gundam Universe toy line. Gundam Universe is under the Bandai Spirits (blue logo) which produces model kits and collectibles such as S.H.Figuarts. While the Bandai red logo would produce figures and collectibles for the younger demographic such DX sentais, Kamen Riders, Ultraman, etc. The RX […]

The RX 78-2 is part of the first wave of Gundam Universe along with RX-0 Unicorn Gundam and XXXG-01 Gundam Wing. The RX 78-2 is apt to be part of the first wave as this is the robot that catapulted the Gundam Universe into pop-culture. It is also the basis of the life-size Gundam located in Yokohoma, Japan a few years ago.

The RX 78-2 came from the Mobile Suit Gundam anime produced in 1979 by Sunrise Anime and Yoshiyuki Tomino. The RX 78-2 is the Earth Federation weapon against the Principality of Zeon that is piloted by Amuro Ray.

The RX 78-2 is like the poster child for the Gundam universe as this the image that is commonly associated with the brand.

The RX 78-2 just like its anime counterpart is the perfect starting point to the Gundam universe. It is a basic figure should you decide to start building model kits and the Gundam Universe version is no different. The box includes the RX 78-2 figure along with an optional pair of hands,  shield and shield mounting joint, beam rifle, 2 saber beam blades, and a Tamashii Stage mounting joint.

Similar to our review of the Gundam Barbatos , the RX 78-2 is well-built figure. Not that this is a deal breaker, the RX 78-2’s plastic feels rubbery compared to the usual plastic that Gundams use.

The RX 78-2 is perfect to be part of the Gundam Universe’s first wave. It set the standard of how Gundam Universe figures are made. They are well-built, sturdy, highly detailed and articulated that allows you to display the figures in different dynamic poses. The only reason that I see why you wouldn’t like the Gundam Universe line is that they are built action figures as compared to building and customizing your own Gundam model kit.

However, if you don’t have the time or would like to start collecting the Gundam Universe line, the RX 78-2 is a great pick and it is perfect for your desk, shelf, or glass cabinet.
