Very accessible; captures the intensity of the upcoming Marvel event; Renaud’s excellent portrayals of the children’s emotional state; ATTACK ON AVENGERS!; one of Hickman’s rare easy-to-comprehend reading materials yet!; Alex Ross’s cover art!

Rants

You have to have knowledge on Hickman’s previous (and current) Marvel works; not everyone is going to appreciate manga-style artwork

To sum it all up..

Marvel tries to outdo DC’s Convergence with its carefully planned (and hyped) comic event – Secret Wars by offering comic book lovers and potential readers Secret Wars #0 as its Free Comic Book Day (FCBD) offering and a taste to its upcoming formal Multiverse-wide conflict that could change the face of Marvel comic continuity for the long haul possible. Simply put the zero issue concerns with the Forever Foundation’s ultimate plan of escaping the inevitable apocalypse by building an ark within four days. In-between these moments are some backgrounds that lead to the impending apocalypse (or Secret Wars) as narrated by Franklin Richards, while his younger and genius-level sister Valerie leads the group of completing the objective. But lo and behold, the issue ends with the twist that Valerie fails to anticipate…onwards to Secret Wars 1, dear Marvel believers!

Jonathan Hickman is the point man here and he makes this free comic very accessible to all demographics. The dialogues are both sharp and poignant, and even lofty and human. Despite the fact that Hickman planted the seeds since his earliest Marvel works in Secret Warriors and Fantastic Four (seriously, Marvel published these opuses in omnibus-level treatment, illustrating how ESSENTIAL Hickman’s visual literary is to his grand superhero meta-narrative), Secret Wars #0 is sufficient enough to give new readers why Secret Wars takes place and how the event originated/factored. This is a rare gem indeed!

The art of Paul Renaud is evenly good. Nothing bombastic nor wasted is presented even this issue is laden with dialogues. Renaud’s portrayals of children’s obvious anxieties in the upcoming Armageddon are spot-on and delicate, even so consistent to maintain or sustain the gripping momentum necessary for the upcoming Secret Wars event.

If there are indicators how the series/event would proceed, Secret Wars #0 show great promises already. I must admit I need to lower my expectations here, but Hickman is the sole remaining Marvel scribe who is still consistent and untainted in the mega-events department. Rick Remender, Matt Fraction, Michael Brian Bendis and Jason Aaron – premier and respected comic book writers – slumped terribly in their respective last Marvel mega-events (Axis, Fear Itself, Age of Ultron and Original Sin, respectively). Hickman is still on the roll, and perhaps this Secret Wars is the culmination of his Marvel epic-ness. This free issue proves his excellent writing prowess, and hopefully, he continues doing this so.

In addition to the main story, this free comic has another fun story entitled – Attack on Avengers. Yes, the Titans of the smashing successful Attack on Titans invade the Marvel Universe and naturally, the Avengers kick some serious ass here! Totally fun and expectedly, the arts utilized are definitely inspired in anime-manga fashion (again, this is not in everyone’s cup of tea)! I also commend the great English translation, and I am even definitely enjoyed this one! This read made me humming the Attack on Titans second series opening theme – Wings of Freedom all over! Great job, Marvel!
