Tom King's skill in writing two contrasting characters; Mitch Gerads' attention to King's writing

BATMAN #23 in many ways is the strangest team-up I’ve seen in recent memory and there’s quite a lot to like in this memorable issue fresh off of the recent “The Button”.

Tom King presents us with a simple murder mystery that’s skillfully presented in the opening pages. Swamp Thing is added into the mix as he’s related to the murder victim and the rest of the issue rolls on well. What catches my attention in this issue is just the fact that Batman and Swamp Thing are in the same page(literally) both in and out of the action. One would think these two characters would completely contrast each other but King eventually deepens their interaction by slowly introducing some similarities between them that you wouldn’t expect. Just reading a rooted conversation between the two delivers a lot thanks to King’s writing and the art done by Mitch Gerads. Gerads makes those smaller moments written by King look wonderful in this already insane but delightful issue, not to mention Gerads also handled colors and inks as well.

Batman #23 is an insane yet delightful looking issue, boasting an odd pairing that works well among a finely presented story that will leave the reader wanting to see more of Batman and Swamp Thing for another issue.
