First CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER Trailer Goes Live!

After the awesome teaser trailer that found its way to the Internet the other day (here’s a link, care of our friends at Newsarama.com), the first full-length trailer for the much-anticipated sequel to the Living Legend of WWII’s first movie is here at last, and my God, is it gorgeous:

Watch the video before reading further.

Seriously, watch it.

GO.

Done? All right.

A few thoughts:

1. The entire opening sequence – parachute-free skydiving – is classic Cap. He does it in the comics, and he does it here again. And it never, ever gets old.

2. The Commander Rogers/Super Soldier/Secret Avengers uniform looks fantastic in real life. I like it a lot more without the silly helmet.

3. Speaking of costumes, the WWII costume (or at least a version of it – the colors are brighter and the helmet is different) appears briefly in 1:37-1:38 and 2:05-2:06.

4. This looks less like a superhero movie and more like an action/espionage thriller, and that’s a step in the right direction. Cap was given a much smaller role in The Avengers, and our boy needs to shine on his own. Shine bright, like a diamond. A genetically enhanced diamond that throws gigantic frisbees and punches people in the face. Yes.

5. 1:24 – 1:32… WONDERFUL.

6. They made the Falcon look cool in live action. The freaking FALCON. Look at that. That alone should tell you how much effort they put into this, because if you can make a government agent with huge ga-honking wings look like a legitimate threat to the safety of anything that isn’t a bag of birdseed, you know you’re doing things right.

7. I’m glad they covered up the Winter Soldier’s face. I mean, we all know who it is (spoilers: it’s Bruce Wayne – kidding, I ain’t telling you, go read Brubaker’s run if you haven’t yet, because it is MAJESTIC), but it’s supposed to be a mystery to the characters in the film. It made sense in the comics (sort of) for him to not have a full face mask, because (1) nobody there initially thought that there was even a slight possibility that the person behind the Winter Soldier’s domino mask was a certain “someone” who was very close to Cap, and (2) the resemblance of Winter Soldier’s face to the aforementioned “someone”, domino mask and all, was effective in playing tricks on Cap’s mind and making him question if the Winter Soldier WAS the person he reminded Cap of.

8. 2:19-2:22. MY GOD. I’m spazzing out and I haven’t even had my coffee yet. That sequence sent chills down my spine, and I wonder if this is an indication of things in the MCU going down the same route as the comics, and if the good Captain will become a legacy character here as well. (It has to be emphasized that catching Cap’s shield is NOT an easy feat.)

CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER hits the silver screen on April 4, 2014. Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, the film features Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan,  Anthony Mackie, Cobie Smulders, Frank Grillo, Emily VanCamp, Hayley Atwell, Robert Redford, and Samuel L. Jackson.
