LOVE WINS Moments from 4 Gay Superhero Couples

Just last weekend, people celebrated the legalization of same-sex marriage in the United States. The news quickly spread through social media which created the #LoveWins. Now we here at Flipgeeks decided to make a list of our favorite love wins moments from the gay superhero couples from the comic books.

Wiccan And Hulkling1) WICCAN and HULKLING

Fate brought this two together. During the absence of the Avengers, Wiccan and Hulking were just some of the teens that was recruited to fill out their absence and become the Young Avengers. The two looks like a perfect match as they have a lot in common but the most notable is their complicated family. Wiccan came from a normal and accepting family of Reform Jews but it turns out that he is actually the reincarnated son of the Scarlet Witch while Hulking is the son of Captain Mar-Vell and Skrull Emperor’s daughter Princess Annele. The two of them started dating each other soon after the formation of the young avengers.  Tough somewhat still young, this couple has been through the civil war, the secret invasion, and the siege and trough each challenge they got through with each other in their arms. With everything they’ve survived together, Hulkling decides to propose to Wiccan (Avengers: The Children’s Crusade #9). It is also notable to say that during that same night, they were called to the Avengers Mansion and were officially made full-fledged Avengers. Oh to be young and in love.

Midnighter-and-Apollo-2

2) APOLLO and MIDNIGHTER

Another story of teammates turned lovers. Apollo and Midnighter are both enhanced humans who can be quite similar to Superman and Batman. After surviving the failure of their first mission, the two chose to disappear. Still, they fought for a better world while in hiding. As time went by, the two eventually became a couple and ended up marrying each other. In fact, their marriage back in 2002 (The Authority #29) is the first gay marriage in mainstream comics. They also adopted a girl named Jenny Quantum. Sadly after DC Comics’ reboot, the two’s history together were erased. Still, they ended up once again as teammates and through a number of issues, a couple. Look like love does conquers all, even corporate induced reboots.

northstar

3) NORTHSTAR and KYLE JINADU

For those of you who doesn’t know, Northstar is the first openly gay character in comics made by Marvel (Alpha Flight #106).Life was hard on him as he was a mutant and a homosexual but he still manage to overcome the challenges. He even found love with Kyle Jinadu. While Northstar is a mutant and a superhero, his other half is a non-superpowered human. Originally Kyle was the manager for Northstar’s sports brand (and still is) but the two eventually started dating. Being someone with no powers, Northstar didn’t want Kyle to be involved in the dangers of the superhero world. Since time and past experiences had proven that to be impossible, the two would eventually reach a compromise. The two eventually got married in New York’s Central Park (Astonishing X-Men #51) which was attended by their friends and teammates. This was a memorable event as this was Marvel’s first gay wedding.

Batwoman and Maggie4) BATWOMAN and MAGGIE

Kate Kane attended in the United States Military Academy but was forced to leave when she admitted that she was a gay. After a run in with a mugger and Batman, Kate was then inspired to follow the steps of the caped crusader. Donning the cape and the identity of Batwoman, she is now one of the most popular lesbian comic book characters and the first one to have her own comic series. Her lover, Maggie Sawyer, is a Metropolis police officer. The two dated without Maggie knowing about Kate’s secret identity which ends up complicating the relationship. Nevertheless, Kate asked the question while in her costumer thus proposing and revealing her true identity to Maggie at the same time (Batwoman #17). Another  first for the comic industry as this is the first lesbian engagement in mainstream comics.
