The Cultural Center of the Philippines presents original drawings and digital reproductions by
the late Tony DeZuñiga entitled “Heroes: Illustrations by Tony DeZu?iga” which opens on
Thursday, 21 June, 2012, 6:00 pm at Bulwagang Fernando Amorsolo (Small Gallery) and Pasilyo
Victorio Edades (4/F Hallway).

The late Tony DeZuñiga (1931 – 2012) began his career as an illustrator, commercial artist, and
cartoonist in the early 1960s. He is one of the first Filipino comic book illustrators to work for
Marvel Comics and DC Comics and was instrumental in introducing Filipino illustrators to the
international scene. In his decades?long career, DeZuñiga penned many classic superheroes
such as the Incredible Hulk, Spider Man, Captain America, and Conan. But he is acknowledged
as the creator of the Western anti?hero Jonah Hex as well as of female superheroes Spider?
Woman and The Black Orchid. Influencing his work are some of his most admired artists like
Jack Kirby, Alex Raymond, and Alex Toth whom he met in person.

DeZuñiga crossed over to the world of video and arcade game design in the 1990s as Senior
Conceptual Designer for Sony Entertainment, Universal Digital Arts, and Sega. He created the
concepts and arcade art for Sega’s Commando type soldiers Dynamite Deka or Dynamite Cop.
In addition to game development, he also participated in marketing and promotions for major
gaming trading shows in both Tokyo and Las Vegas.

He received numerous awards including SEGA President’s Award for Excellence, an Award of
Distinction for Recognition as Outstanding Filipino Artist in America, a Plaque of Distinction
presented by Philippine Government Council of the Arts, and Best?of?show Award by Delicato
Vineyards in Manteca, California.

HEROES: Illustrations by Tony DeZuñiga will be on view until September 16, 2012. Gallery
hours are from 10 am to 6 pm, daily except Mondays and holidays. Admission is free. For
