Writer Greg Rucka returns to DC Comics just in time for the DC Rebirth phenomenon, and what better place he considers truly his own turf is in the pages of WONDER WOMAN #1, with Liam Sharp who does the pencils.

This move is excellent for Greg Rucka is known for writing, portraying and elevating female characters. And Wonder Woman is equally a powerful superheroine character that deserves an excellent writer to begin with. It is true that Greg did a memorable Wonder Woman run in the 2000s, alongside with Nicola Scott, another great female comic book auteur. Right now, Greg presents another mystery tale that befits for the great Amazonian goddess/queen/ruler and to sophisticated readers around.
In typical Rucka fashion, readers are treated with two stories that will eventually converge in the greater narrative. One deals with the wandering Amazonian while the other focuses on her human love interest, Trevor, who has a mission that is obviously grim and brutal. His script on Wonder Woman’s character is direct and concise. Few thought balloons are presented but Greg makes sure that these are appropriately placed. There are few fight scenes to focus more on the stories themselves since the obvious outcomes are predictable except for the last page that serves an excellent reason to stay tune with the next Wonder Woman chapter.

Liam Sharp’s drawings are almost similar with David Finch and Fabok, two excellent Wonder Woman illustrators. But Sharp’s artistic take is darker due to the given plot and settings. His visual sequential paneling is generally commendable though there are some angular perspectives that are jarring to view. His background illustrations are equally good to mesmerize for he seems to love intricate details, particularly the jungle scenes and the African Sahara regions. His facial projections are in-synced with Rucka’s script. I say, Sharp’s pencils are already sharp enough to get his artistic groove sharper as the story progresses.

Wonder Woman #1 is just a hors d’oeuvre towards a great visual narrative both Rucka and Sharp like the readers to expect with. Although this initial chapter needs a rereading for new readers around, it remains a strong start but it is still best to read the entire The New 52 Wonder Woman run to get a good idea why Queen Diana is a goddess in the first place. Regardless, this Rebirth issue is definitely a good trajectory point, and Rucka is the perfect gentleman to give Wonder Woman back her true luster.
