In Deadpool #7 (2015), we were introduced to the 2099 version of the Merc with the Mouth, daughter of Wade Wilson and succubus Queen Shiklah. Also, that futuristic one introduced her anti-thesis, an imposter of sorts. Five issues later, Deadpool #12, creative team Gerry Duggan and Scott Koblish return the 2099 storyline to treat us Marvel 2099 homage: Deadpool versus Deadpool! Yes, you read it right, it’s a ladies’ smack down alright. Duggan’s scripts are littered due to the obvious title’s nature, but somehow manage to be serious until the one and only Deadpool appears. Yet the true highlight really is the battle of future Deadpools, including their rather serious exchanges that felt force and uncharacteristically Deadpool, only the costumes and their respective connectivity with the notorious anti-hero. The reveal in the end is the only shocking part, but another present-day story arc is already lined-up until issue #19. SIGH!

Koblish’s gritty, garish and gloomy takes on the Marvel 2099 and Deadpools are definitely fitted to the mood of the story. But, he makes lots of Eastern egg references along the way, particularly in Deadpool’s (lady’s) descent to her pop’s former trophy room (spot them all, you will definitely be rewarded!). The paneling is really scattered to justify the fast-pacing conflict between two future mercenaries, but can be a bit disorientating to follow just the same. Thus, some readers need to pace on following the sequences here. If so, one needs to re-read this to fully comprehend the seriousness of the confrontations these Deadpools want to resolve. And, to be honest here, Koblish’s art is something of an acquired taste, like Deadpool himself. Nonetheless,

Deadpool #12 is still a satisfying read, although we have to wait until December (?) to witness what this 2099 storyline is in-store for us.
