I was able to see his work up-close was when I attended the Nike Battle Force event in 2018 that featured a life scale version of his creation TEQ63.

This toy review is different from the usual reviews that I do for action figures. This is my first review for an art toy. Art toys or designer toys are created by artists with a limited release which usually fetches a high price. However, you are getting your money’s worth as you are not only purchasing a collectible but an art piece.

Recently, I’ve been fortunate enough to obtain a figure from the Otomo series, an Otomo MicroTEQ, which is a collaboration between Quiccs and Martian Toys. I got the 3″ edition but the series also have a 6″ and 12″ edition.

As you can see on the Otomo MicroTEQ colorway and design, it’s inspired by the 1988 anime, Akira. The jacket  is reminiscent of the one worn by Kaneda particularly the capsule on the back.

TEQ63-6

What amazes me most about this figure is the attention to detail put into in it. It is highly detailed even for a small figure. Take a look on the level of the detail on the paint job on the head. You wouldn’t notice it from afar but taking a closer look shows that it’s a painted circuit board on the head piece near the skull.

TEQ63-7

You could also notice that the different logos on the jacket are parodies of brands such as Boss,  Canon, and Shoei. Of course, you wouldn’t miss the three stripes on the shoes.

The only issue that you may have is probably the price point.

However, it wouldn’t be fair to compare an art piece to let’s say a Marvel Legends or an S.H.Figuarts. Depending on the number of pieces released, an art toy such as this may range from PhP 1,000.00+ up to the upwards of PhP 10,000.00+.

Overall, I only have praises for the Otomo MicroTEQ for having a good paint job, well-sculpted, and a highly  detailed figure. Depending on your budget and availability, a 3″ figure would be a nice way to start an art toy collection.
