The GODDESS of Thunder is back! And SHE’S here to stay.
Jason Aaron and
Russell Dauterman are back post-
Secret Wars with their smash-hit Jane Foster the Lady of Lightning. The new
Mighty Thor #1 focuses on just pushing Thor into the fray when dead light elves from Alfheim come raining from the sky with the ominous message “So begins the war of realms”. Jane Foster has apparently become the ambassador of Midgard and has taken it upon herself to try and convince the congress of worlds to act. Meanwhile, it’s revealed that Malekith has been committing these acts of war with assistance by Dario Agger (Roxxon CEO by day, Bloodthirsty Minotaur by night) and even our first look at post-Secret Wars Loki!
The best reveal of the issue is Thor’s secret. Jane Foster has been diagnosed with cancer and is currently undergoing chemo. But apparently every time she changes into Thor, the therapy is undone. What Aaron has done is create a classic all-powerful character paired with a severe drawback. Which really isn’t surprising considering Jason Aaron’s experience with stories with compelling arcs (Thor: God of Thunder, Original Sin).
The art though is fantastic. Russell Dauterman’s art just bursts through the page with saturation. He displays the magic and rightful bright hues that Asgardians deserve. His style is really what pulls the issue together and i’m assuming it’s what will tie the series as one of the year’s best releases. Not to mention that cover art collaboration with Matt Wilson is AMAZING.
This powerhouse team has delivered potentially one of the biggest Thor arcs to date with their wickedly satisfying first issue!
