Imagine your reading your favorite comic book. Now remove all the speech bubbles and the narration. Would you still be able to tell what is going on? And if you think you do, are you sure that’s what the authors are trying to tell? Now this is one of the reason why silent comics are often hard to come by. But every now and then someone creates a silent comics that manages to hit the heart.

Last year that someone was Manix Abrera and his second silent comic 14. This year, that someone’s name is Rob Cham. Rob Cham (The Amazing Topless Head, Sad Comics For Dirty Lovers) has once again birthed a new graphic novel. This time he tries to prove that illustrations speak louder than words through his newest work, Light.

Light follows a nameless hero whose quest takes him to the depths of the world below. Not the underworld per se but more of a journey to the center of the earth adventure. In there he meets an ally who joins his travels as he encounters various elements and creatures, some friendly and some that are not so much, so that he can complete a quest with a result that he himself doesn’t know.

Light has a story that is both simple and “light” (pun intended). But don’t let that put you off, it is still very engaging and fun. The story shown in each page is fairly easy to understand. The transition of scenes also goes smoothly. There are also pages that create a montage which I think is a good way of saving pages while still progressing the story.

Rob Cham has stepped up his game with the art of Light. His illustrations looked neat once again due to his solid line work. As for the level of details, it is now more noticeable but what makes it stand out is how is still manages to avoid looking congested. It’s just the right amount. As for the creatures in this book, most of them resembles something that we have seen before. Still he manages to give them a glow (another light pun intended) with another element that I liked in this comic. The colors. The balance between black and white is just the right amount which makes them complement each other. The darkness of the background creates a great contrast for colors giving them a more vivid appearance. The colors also give a certain warmth not just to the creatures but also the environment. Another noticeable aspect is the light, or more specifically how the light hits the objects. The shading in in Light is really commendable. The book uses up the whole page for an image unlike traditional comic books that uses panels. Some books are often described as “page turners” meaning that you’d want to read it rapidly. Light is the opposite of those books. You are more likely to take your time and check out the illustrations.

The book is a good read for all ages. I think kids would be able to enjoy this especially those that hasn’t started to read yet. After all, Light is like a daydream of a kid that is full of adventure and different creatures. I do believe that Light will be a hit and I do hope that our nameless hero would see the light (last pun) of another day in a sequel.
