Transformers scribe John Barber mixes elements of different tropes to try and muster up a palatable comic – Action Man #1.
Simple is probably the best way to describe this book. It’s art is simple the plot is simple, and the writing too simple and thus not original. Simply, it’s underdone, cliche and boring.
It takes a lot from different works, it’s basically a patchwork book; a Kingsman, Suicide Squad and James Bond hybrid. It starts interesting with the original Action Man at work with a protege and of course he dies (ala Kingsman) in the first few pages, immediately giving way for his sidekick to take his place, an overused trope.
What follows is a brief history of exactly how ‘007’ he is with a little substitute Amanda Waller figure telling him what to do. You can see that Barber tries to make his writing more dynamic, but under the banner of IDW he can’t fully express himself without adult language, which is not to say that cursing gives the character but rather adds to it, for example how Mark Millar uses dialogue to give character and an interest point to his stories. This is something Barber can use in the future if this run lasts. Definitely something that could use some work but okay enough to pick up.
