Star Wars #18 is the penultimate chapter of the 4-issue story arc where Princess Leia is literally being tested to her absolute limits. To make things more interesting, the unknown mastermind is getting ahead of the curve while Luke and Han have finally arrived just in time but reserved for the best part — next issue.
It is not surprising why
Jason Aaron deserves to be re-nominated as Best Writer for the upcoming Eisner’s Awards. The script is lighthearted and at the same time, intense, pulsating, exciting, suspenseful. Almost every page is definitely possessed everything a classic Star Wars reading has–good bantering and/or exchanges, strong women moments, red herrings, balanced to fast pacing and/or twists-and-turn direction. Seriously, I never miss
Star Wars: Episode VII nor overly excited for Episode VIII as long as Aaron maintains his level of writing consistency.
The dynamic Pinoy illustrative duo
Leinil Yu-
Gerry Alanguilan produces some of the best artworks in their Star Wars collaborative effort yet. Sure, the heavy inking is justifiable due to the setting and the overall feel of the story itself. But the closeups of the Star Wars characters are undeniably clean, detailed, even smooth, not rugged nor sluggish.
Sunny Gho‘s colors definitely help in enhancing Yu-Alanguilan’s artistic synthesis by providing “life” to the claustrophobic and intense story already.
Speaking of inks, there are very minor spots that I feel that are overdone. But these minor asterisks are virtually unnoticeable except for the eagle-eyed critics around. But overall, the latest penultimate issue of the another Star Wars story arc hits the right chords and notes for an engaging and interesting set-up and hopefully a climatic duel between this unknown perpetrator and the rest of the Star Wars gang. Excellent job, Aaron, Yu, Gerry, and Gho!
