Marvel Reveals Thanos’ Birth Name
WARNING: This article contains spoilers for Thanos #14, available in stores now.
There are only a few supervillains that have continuously plagued the Marvel Universe over and over again. The likes of Dr. Doom, Thanos and Galactus have appeared repeatedly in Marvel’s biggest events. But thanks to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Thanos has risen to the forefront of Marvel’s big villains in recent years, and has even become a household name in mainstream pop culture. He is set to finally make his move in the upcoming movie Avengers: Infinity War.
In the character’s long history, we’ve simply known him as Thanos the Mad Titan. As pointed out by Comic Book Resources, creators Donny Cates, Geoff Shaw, Antonio Fabela and Clayton Cowles explore the deep backstory of Thanos in Thanos #14, revealing his birth name as a result.
As it turns out, his mother Sui-San gave him the birth name of Dione, as revealed by an older incarnation of him, King Thanos. To have a character with such rich legacy have a retconned name truly comes as a shock. It’s still remains to be seen if this revelation will have a lasting impact for Thanos, and the greater Marvel Universe.
Thanos #14 by Donny Cates, Geoff Shaw, Antonio Fabela and Clayton Cowles is on sale now.
