Steve Rogers Returns as CAPTAIN AMERICA

Marvel has just announced the return of Steve Rogers as Captain America. The character will headline his own new ongoing comic book titled Captain America: Steve Rogers from the creative team of Nick Spencer and Jesus Saiz.

Nothing is permanent in the world of comic books. It was only a matter of time for Steve Rogers to return to the role, especially this year celebrating his 75th anniversary and with the latest Marvel Studios film Captain America: Civil War out this summer.

As for the fate of Sam Wilson, Spencer assured that he will remain as Captain America in his current comic book, Captain America: Sam Wilson, meaning there are going to be two Captain Americas running around.

“It means we’ll have two Captain Americas. When Steve handed the shield to Sam, it didn’t come with any caveats. It’s his,” Spencer said in an interview with Marvel.com. “Steve respects and admires what his old partner is doing, and wants him to carry on. There are enough problems out there, and enough bad guys, to keep both of them busy. They’ll have very different missions; Sam will continue fighting the battles no one else will go near, while Steve is faced with a resurgent threat from his past: Hydra is back, and stronger than ever.”

And since Sam Wilson will stay as Cap alongside Steve Rogers, he gets to keep the iconic round shield while Rogers will receive a modernized costume and a new shield designed by artist Daniel Acuña.

“And the greatest part [is] the shield, indeed!” said Saiz. “Its shape is similar to the original shield Cap had back in the 1940’s, the pointy one, but this one has two main innovations: its tip can deploy an ‘energy blade’ so Cap can cut into things, and the shield can be divided in two, so Steve can use both halves, one with each arm. Both modifications will help us see a completely different set of moves for Captain America, moves that we [have] never seen Steve use before, in terms of hand-to-hand combat.”

There was no mention on how Rogers returned to being young again, but Spencer teased that “something happens that restore Steve to full vigor” in a future story arc. Furthermore, Sharon Carter is confirmed to be one of the members of his new team, as well as ” a couple of other faces from his past that make very fun additions to the story.”
