ODY-C, Vol. 1 by Matt Fraction and Christian Ward is basically Homer’s The Odyssey but done in a sci-fi adaptation and with all the characters being female. If you’ve read Homer’s The Odyssey before, chances are you already know how the story goes. But what makes this comic unique is that it feels familiar but it makes an effort to feel like it’s something different altogether.

Matt Fraction sticks to the story to what was presented in the original Odyssey and even the narration feels like you’re reading an old mythology piece. The dialogue of the characters is the part of the writing that starts to feel modern mostly with characters swearing.

If Fraction’s writing is what pulled you into this comic then you’ll definitely stay for the art. Christian Ward’s art here is another highlight which makes this comic even more thrilling. He does the space opera setting nicely especially on how the colors were done as they look like bursts of energy in almost every panel. With the art, there’s almost never a dull scene to look at even when the scenario is just dialogue between characters.

Overall, ODY-C delivers. It’s a great tribute to the original Homer’s Odyssey but it’s twisted enough to stand as something completely different. The dialogue between characters feels modern. The art definitely delivers on that space opera feel. The only drawback here is that some of the facial expressions of characters look odd but it depends on your personal preference. So whether you’re a fan of Greek mythology or a fan of space opera or just a Matt Fraction fan in general then this is worth your time.
