Peter Milligan and Lendro Fernandez are here to darken your day with their new thriller The Discipline #1.
Melissa, a married woman with vivid and violent sexual dreams, is drawn to Orlando, a mystery man that she can’t help but want. As the issue progresses, she falls for his seduction and eventually ends up meeting with him to finally have sex. But they’re interrupted by a demon crashing through the window.
The Discipline pushes the story into darker waters by adding a mystical element. The main problem is that the story moves too fast and jumps from one panel to another without finesse. It just gets so confusing that “horny girl gets jumped by demons” becomes the most apt description of the plot. So… are they demons or aliens?
The story is ambitious; not saying that ambition is a negative but if you’re dealing with thrillers, shouldn’t the story be a little more thrilling? Peter Milligan is a pretty decent writer, having worked on dark thrillers like Animal Man and not to mention a pretty decent run on Hellblazer but he’s also known for some critical misses like Stormwatch and Red Lanterns. He has a great story here, execution is what’s missing. If they’ll get a great co-writer, I would be more enticed in getting the next issue.
As for the art, there’s something off about Leandro Fernandez’s work. It lacks detail, which ordinarily isn’t a problem but plain sketch only works out when the story is so heavy, that the art suppresses the issue from bursting off the page too much. The only comic worth noting that Fernandez has lent his art to is the Punisher Max series, penned by Garth Ennis. So far, there isn’t much of his work to go on or to compare.
Overall, The Discipline #1 has the potential to deliver a dark fantasy but falls short on execution and style. Definitely stick around for the second issue to see if it’s worth the read!
