24209000_10155873975054035_1922428499_oDo we really need another Batman title? Seriously? That’s what I was thinking after getting Batman: Creature of the Night #1. Don’t get me wrong, I love the Caped Crusader, but there’s so much going on with him, so many titles, that we risk Bat-max saturation.

And yet, Kurt Busiek and John Paul Leon sidestep that fatigue by creating a haunting, emotionally driven work. Batman, while playing a big part in all this, is mostly tangential. We follow a young boy, Bruce Wainwright, who is a devoted Batman fan. Unfortunately, his parents fall victim to crime and brutal murder too.

Through beautiful art and a gripping story, we are given the first steps in Wainwright’s journey, not only as he tries to come to terms with what has happened to him, but also as a strange creature begins to appear, one that is connected in some way to both him and Batman. I can’t wait for the next issue.
