Origin stories are always the stories that interest me the most about any character as I discover a lot about the character especially his or her beginnings which then lead to their place in their fictional world. These stories also tell me whether a said character is worth following or not. How exactly does KLAW HC fare in the gallery of origin stories?

Klaw is about a boy named Angel Tomassini and his power of turning into a tiger. The concept is cool but as I read on, that was one of the few things that made this comic special. Antoine Ozanam’s writing is fine. Fine because it’s written too safely and by that I mean Ozanam chose to tell KLAW’s story in the structure of a generic superhero origin story. Main character finds out he has powers, his mentor teaches him to use powers properly, defeat the bad guy and get the girl. Ozanam hit all those too familiar beats which occasionally reduced my interest in this comic but it’s not all bad as Ozanam mixes in some unique twists in the story accompanied with some neat mythology surrounding Angel Tomassini’s powers which just end up being the small moments in the story that truly made Ozanam get out of his safe zone in writing.

Joel Jurion’s art compensates for the underutilized writing potential this comic brought. Jurion makes almost every character unique in their designs as no one is similarly structured here and some panels caught my attention when it came to perspective drawings. Jurion’s choice of putting colorful characters against backdrops of cool or warm color palettes is what made the artwork as a whole a highlight of this comic.

Klaw HC is just another superhero origin story that’s visually pleasing and sprinkled with some unique story beats that occasionally made this comic go beyond generic but went back down again to the generic zone but it doesn’t mean this comic isn’t worth the time if you’re invested in origin stories and humans that transform into fighting animals.
