Greg Rucka and Nicola Scott provide readers more thrills and suspense in Black Magick #5. It also marks the end of the first story arc entitled AWAKENING.
Rucka is an expert of presenting female characters in the way he is actually one of the best in characterizing them. This is more prominent in the pages in Morgan’s house where both Rowan and Morgan’s wife, Anna, are having a heart-to-heart conversation regarding the latter’s upcoming motherhood and her husband’s welfare. Rucka puts the mysterious group named the Hammer into motion that would definitely influence in the upcoming story arc.
Nicola Scott’s artwork are very consistent since the first chapter. Detailed in every panel and lushly drawn even when Rowan and Alex confront the unknown but powerful supernatural force. Despite the black-and-white color scheme implemented in the issue, her art is still stunning. Her female portrayals are so realistically grounded, including the wounds Alex received from her supernatural enemy. The colors are specifically applied on the magic spells which are nicely placed, especially Rowan’s police badge.
There are neither nudity nor sex scenes here but there’s a lot of profanity here, particularly in that bloody confrontation. I actually say that moment is well appropriate.
Black Magick #5 ends with Rucka holding the readers’ attention until to the last page with building up suspense up to the climatic showdown. It would then eventually lead to the introductory of a more powerful force that Rowan and Alex must confront in the next arc.
Both Greg and Nicola maintain a high level of artistic consistency in their respective fields, and I hope they stay that way in the next arc and beyond.
