LET’S TALK KOMIKS: The Exciting Emiliana Kampilan and her Dead Balagtas

elcome to Let’s Talk Komiks, a regular series where we interview local comic book creators about their works and upcoming projects, among other things. This time, here is Emiliana Kampilan. She started Dead Balagtas on the Internet. And now, Anino Comics released her Dead Balagtas Tomo: Mga Sayaw Ng Dagat at Lupa  back in December 2017.  Let’s talk komiks.

FLIPGEEKS: Hi Emiliana! The last time we spoke was back at Elbikon 2017, how’s it been until now?
EMILIANA KAMPILAN: Hi. New scheds up for me kasi and medyo malalang year ito for the non-bayong self. Kaya madugo araw-araw.

This December was the release of your comic, DEAD BALAGTAS TOMO 1: MGA SAYAW NG DAGAT AT LUPA. What is it about?

Emiliana Kampilan

The last time we spoke, you released a preview black & white zine of it. What is your interest about Eba at Adan? How do you want them to be represented in Dead Balagtas?

Bukod sa pagiging ‘cool’ nila ika nga, mahalaga sila kasi patunay sila ng kakayahan nating mag-isip nang malalim at often, beyond what is visible to us. Sa komiks ko gusto ko i-explore yang konsepto na yan, and not from a Judeo-Christian point of view but mula sa pananaw ng mga lumang Pilipino harmonized with scientific facts. Not unlike the geological origin discussion rin sa Volume 1.

You started Dead Balagtas as a webcomic. With years passed, how much have you and Dead Balagtas grown up?

You mentioned in Twitter that a portion of these sales of Dead Balagtas will be donated for a good cause, could you tell us on how did you come up with it?
As I always put it, kumbaga nachikahan lang ako, tapos ako yung pinaka-madaldal na chismosa. The stories belong to the people; natural lang na kabahagi sila sa proceeds nito. Rather than it being a donation, it is simply giving to the Sulods ng Panay (sa kanila galing yung Tungkung Langit – Laon Sina) what is due to them.

Dead Balagtas

The format of Dead Balagtas is not usual. What encouraged you to have this book format and why?

How does it feel that you’ve created something that is now a part of Filipino Literature?
Kaya gawa nanaman uli. It’s a book that really renders itself welcome to being outdated.

What comic books, books and other reading materials do you like to read? Why do you like them?
Comics; both western and manga. Hahaha. Basta yung may matututunan yung mambabasa.

Where did you learn to draw?
Prayers and exercise. Prayers and exercise.

For you, what are the best local comic books out there that you would recommend to any reader?
Ang dami! at in no particular order, basta mula sa Haliya Publishing; kalidad.

For strips! siyempre gawa ni Kuya Manix (Abrera), Pugad Baboy, Crazy Jhenny, Opismeyts. Please go to cons po.

How do you want to impact a person who would pick up Dead Balagtas?

Anino Comics will have a book launch Dead Balagtas Tomo 1: Mga Sayaw Ng Dagat At Lupa with premiere signings of the creators behind Ang Hari Ng Komyut and Sandali this 2PM Sunday, January 21, 2018 at The Studio, Fully Booked BGC.
