Sony Files Patent for New Handheld

It seems that Sony isn’t done with the handheld gaming scene as the PlayStation manufacturer files for a patent of what looks like a new handheld that coincidentally looks similar to Nintendo’s Switch.

The patent, spotted by NeoGAF user ponpo, was originally filed in 2015 but was only recently published. The handheld looks to be a tablet-like device with attachable controllers, similar to the Nintendo Switch’s design, but it isn’t explicitly shown in these images whether the controllers are actually detachable.

Unlink to the Switch’s, the controller isn’t streamlined to the tablet device, instead retaining a similar Dualshock design with very little compromise. It may be more than a coincidence that Sony publishes a patent so close to the Switch’s release, but it’s important to note that not all patents actually get produced. No doubt Sony still has a strong pull on the handheld market, but only time will tell if this new portable PlayStation will ever become more than just a concept.
