Supergirl Shows Off New Suit and New Characters at San Diego Comic-Con!

It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s Supergirl with a new suit at San Diego Comic-Con!

Okay, so Supergirl might have lacked some new footage to show during their first look promo at this year’s SDCC—understandable considering leading lady Melissa Benoist is still showing off her skills on stage in Beautiful: The Carole King Musical on Broadway—but they more than made up for it when they teased a new armored suit for the Girl of Steel.

Is Kara Zor-el the one under the helmeted suit or is it the splinter version of Kara that appeared in Siberia? Something that was inspired by the Superman comic book storyline Red Son. In all honesty, the armored suit reminded me so much of LexLuthor’s Action Comics #957 suit that I’m inclined to think Lena Luthor might just be the one donning the new Supergirl suit.

We’ll get back to that one, first let’s talk about the Supergirl panel at Ballroom 20 where the cast, like stars Melissa Benoist, Chyler Leigh, Katie McGrath, David Harewood, Mehcad Brooks, and Jesse Rath, along with producers Sarah Schechter, Jessica Queller, and Robert Rovner answered many a question about the upcoming season.

Rovner started off Q&A when he describe that the show wanted be “a little bit more grounded” this year but while it has a more grounded tone there will still be the “adventure, and the heart, and the humor.”

It was also revealed at the panel that Kara will go back to her journalism roots, so expect a lot of Kara Danvers at CatCo this new season.

Amidst the gushing of her costars about how amazing she is on Broadway (side note: I saw the play and absolutely kills it as Carole King!), Benoist believes that Kara will start the season “feeling pretty good” and “the most confident we’ve ever seen her.”

But the theme of the season according to producer Jessica Queller is “what is stronger: Hope or fear.” It seems the challenge that Supergirl will be facing early in the season is the rising anti-alien sentiment, which by the looks of the trailer will be led by Agent Liberty.

And what of the other people in Supergirl’s life? As we all saw in the season three finale, Alex will now be the new head of the Department of Extranormal Operations. It seems she’s going on a journey to figure out how to balance being the head of a powerful organization and wanting a family.

As for the other woman in Kara’s life, Katie McGrath explains that the relationship between Lena and Kara is the same as it’s always been but the Lena and Supergirl is a whole different story.

One of the biggest surprises of the panel was when the Benoist and co. welcomed new cast member Nicole Maines, who will play the newest addition to CatCo and the firsttrans superheroon TVNiaNal, aka Dreamer. It seems Nia will be the show’s own take on Legionnaire Dream Girl.

The producers also announced that they have added David Ajala as Manchester Black and April Parker Jones as Colonel Haley for season four.

It’s not a DCTV panel without the mention of the yearly crossover. The introduction of Kate Kane aka Batwomanwill be the focus of this year’s Supergirl, The Flash, and Arrow crossover.

The panel ends with producer Sarah Schechter saying that Alex might really like her, explaining that “strong women like her each other and strong women support each other.”
