Robocop (2014) Update!

Director José Padilha’s reboot of the 80’s classic “Robocop” has finally come up with it’s very first official poster today. We were treated to a sneak peek of what the movie looks like with the trailer released a week ago and it was received with pretty much mixed reactions from fans and newcomers alike.

Some notable changes to the series would be Officer Alex Murphy’s transformation from an ordinary police to a crime fighting machine and his partner’s gender. In the original Robocop (1987), Murphy who was played by Peter Weller was brutally murdered by thugs led by crime lord Clarence Boddicker played by Kurtwood Smith. Murphy was pronounced dead at the hospital which lead to OCP (Omni Consumer Products) harvesting his remains and creating Detroit’s first cyborg police. In the 2014 reboot, Murphy who is now played by Joel Kinnaman is killed by accidentally triggering a bomb in his car leaving him with fatal burns and dismembered limbs. I guess they needed to tone down the brutality with how Alex Murphy dies in the movie since the original was too disturbing and they may be targeting a larger audience base by lowering the movie’s rating classification. Another noticeable change would be that Robocop’s partner would now be male actor compared to Nancy Allen’s character as Officer Anne Lewis in the original.

Major changes were also made with the character design and his iconic gun. It still pops out of his hip though which is really cool! Fans would be delighted to know that the original suit will have a cameo in the film as shown in the trailer. Some more exciting additions to the franchise would be Michael Keaton as Raymond Sellars, the villainous CEO of OmniCorp and Samuel L. Jackson as Pat Novak, a media mogul who exercises compelling charm that inspires devotion in others. Gary Oldman will also be part of the cast as Dr.Dennett Norton, the guy who created Robocop himself.

Here’s the official movie trailer for those who haven’t seen it yet:
